Science experts gather to discuss emerging research, education, and public policy at Ocean Sciences Meeting

Kevin Speer

February 2012 - Deep-C scientists were among more than 4,000 who gathered in Salt Lake City, Utah from February 19–24, 2012 for the 2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting. The meeting offered a venue for scientific exchange across broad marine science disciplines, including physical, biological, chemical and geological oceanography.

This year’s Ocean Sciences Meeting included a number of presentations focused on the Gulf of Mexico and 2010 blowout of the Macondo reservoir beneath the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, which resulted in the world’s largest accidental release of hydrocarbons into the ocean in recorded history. And Deep-C researchers hosted a variety sessions, posters and information sharing opportunities during the five-day conference.

Dr.Christopher Reddy was a featured presenter. His session “How Did We Do?:  Academia’s Contributions to the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill”offered an assessment of the response and contributions academic scientists made in the days and months following the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Dr. Reddy is a senior scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry and Director of the Coastal Ocean Institute at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Other presentations given by Deep-C researchers on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and other topics related to research activities in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico were:

Compass-connections

"Scientists must go beyond publishing in peer-reviewed journals if they want their research to inform decisions about our future"  -- COMPASS: Making Connections

Deep-C is organizing a one-day workshop entitled "Mixing Oil and Water: Making Your Science Matter when the Stakes are High" on Tuesday, February 26 (the day BEFORE our two-day "All Hands" meeting). Leading policy makers and journalists will address such questions as: Why should scientists communicate to non-scientists? How can you deliver a clear and compelling message? How can you ace an interview? Why do the cultures of science and journalists sometimes clash and what are dos and don'ts of dealing with the media?

The workshop will consist of two parts: a morning plenary session, which will be open to members of the Deep-C community and will involve general discussion of the questions raised above, and an afternoon session, which will provide hands-on practice exercises, including message crafting and mock interviews.

A team of four professional science communicators will facilitate both sessions, and they will provide participants first-hand experience interacting with the policymakers and the media through a range of realistic scenarios. The workshop is based on the prestigious Aldo Leopold Leadership program based out of Stanford University.

Purpose of Workshop: In this changing and challenging world, it is imperative that scientists and students become more effective and comfortable communicators and learn more about each other's work. This workshop provides the tools for doing just that. Policy-makers and journalists will introduce scientists to methods and tools for talking more clearly and concisely to the press, public, and policymakers. This event will establish a network of new connections between the scientists and journalists. An additional outcome may well be to inspire new collaborations among the scientist participants. So don't miss out on this opportunity to get the tools and connections you need to engage the wider world in your work. Seats are limited so please let us know if you will attend the Policy Workshop when you register for the "All Hands" Meeting.

The two-day workshop will include four sessions -- each will feature an introductory and overview presentation, 3-minute speed talks by poster presenters, an open discussion of synthesis and planning, and a poster session.  We also have a number of special activities planned in addition to the usual meeting fare.

The presentation and poster sessions will offer an opportunity to share your research with colleagues and learn about their progress and plans.  This is also our first annual progress meeting, so members of Deep-C's external Advisory Board will be on hand to be briefed on and provide a review of our efforts to date.

A speRV-Apalacheecial event is planned for Wednesday evening at the FSU Marine Lab, offereing Deep-C scientists a first look at the new FSU research vessel and a "North Florida" style reception. All Deep-C PIs are required to attend the workshop. If you are not able to attend, please contact me and make sure that an alternate will be there on your behalf to discuss in detail your progress and plans for the coming months.
